Russian Grammar: The Genitive of Plural Masculine Nouns

Posted on May 9th, 2013

Hey guys! As you know, I’ve been away on a nice vacation for a few weeks. Had a great time, and am happy to be back! You’ve probably missed Russian grammar lessons while I was away, and will be happy to hear that I’m back and will be publishing new lessons starting this week. More Russian4real lessons are coming! :)

You’ve already learned how to form the genitive case of the Russian singular nouns (if you haven’t, you can watch this lesson – The Genitive Case of Singular Russian Nouns). Today we will talk about the genitive case of the plural nouns. I decided to divide this lesson into two parts and cover only masculine nouns in today’s lesson. You will learn about the genitive plural of feminine and neuter nouns in our lesson next week.

Let’s begin. You can watch the video first and then read through the grammar lesson below the video.

1. Enindg -ей
If a noun ends in -ь, ж, ч, ш, щ, add ending -ей
Врач – врачей

If a noun ends in , replace it with -ей
Словарь – словарей

2. Ending -ов:
For the nouns ending in any other consonants, the ending is -ов:
Кот – котов
Стол – столов

3. Use ending you – ев in the following cases:

• If a noun ends in – й
Трамвай – трамваев

• If a nominative plural is soft
Брат – братья – братьев

• In case if ending –ов will break a spelling rule
Американец – американцев

Now, let’s practice, the words below are singular nouns in the nominative case, please make them plural in the genitive case:

Плащ
Компьютер
Японец

This is all for today! Next week we will talk about the genitive case of the plural feminine and neuter nouns. Let me know if you have any questions by leaving a comment below this post.

See you soon!
