How to Learn Russian on Facebook

Posted on April 26th, 2012

Learn Russian on FacebookLearning a new language can be very expensive. The good news is that you can find plenty of free resources to help you learn and practice Russian.

One of such resources is a popular social media network – Facebook. A little over a week ago, I was giving tips on how to learn Russian language on Twitter, today we’ll talk about how to learn Russian on Facebook.

In my opinion, one of the most useful features for the Russian language learners on Facebook is newsfeed. This great feature allows you to look through the status updates from the people you are friends with and pages you “liked”. This means that if you like a language learning resource, you will be getting regular updates from it delivered in your newsfeed.

Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of Facebook and its newsfeed as a language learning resource.

1. “Like” Russian Language Learning Resources

Again, this may sound very obvious, but as you know, there is nothing wrong with obvious! “Liking” many different Russian language learning recourses on Facebook will help you stay in touch with the current trends, learn new words, grammar, and find out about more interesting and valuable resources that can help you learn the language.

In addition, participating in the conversations on Facebook pages, taking part in contests, sweepstakes and giveaways will make your studies even more exciting and fun!

Besides, you will have a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, who are also learning Russian. Together you can start a discussion, exchange language learning resources, and practice.

2. Make Friends with Native Speakers

Would you like to practice your language skills for free? You can do that by becoming friends with the native Russian speakers on Facebook.

Engage in discussions with your new friends, read and translate their status updates. This way you will learn a lot of new interesting contemporary vocabulary and slang.

Often people post pictures or videos on Facebook, this will give you an opportunity to read through the comments below the pictures, view the videos in Russian and practice your listening skills.

To practice your grammar skills, I encourage you to comment on your new friends’ status updates and make your own status updates in Russian. For example, you have just learned conjugations in Russian. After you finished your homework, why not practice Russian conjugations on Facebook? This will build your confidence and make your studying so much more fun.

3. Change Default Language

Here is another tip: go to your Facebook language settings at the bottom of the page and change your default setting to Russian language. Now you can learn Facebook jargon, as well as months and days of the week in Russian. This great feature allows you to immerse in Russian a little more.

Facebook is an online social network that helps you to connect with people from all over the world. Don’t be shy and engage in discussions in Russian! Don’t worry about making mistakes. Instead I encourage you to be proud of yourself: you are learning a new very difficult, but at the same time a very beautiful language! Good luck!

Of course, now is that the time for me to encourage you to join russian4real.com on Facebook! :) If you do, you will learn a new Russian word every day and stay updated on the great Russian language learning resources.
