Last week we talked about the first conjugation verbs in Russian, and today let’s talk about the second conjugation.
Verbs that belong to the second conjugation mostly end in –ить, except for the exceptions mentioned in the first lesson - брить, стелить, почить, зиждиться, бить, вить, лить, пить, шить, гнить, жить, зыбить, -шибить (ушибить, ошибиться).
There are also a few exceptions that have endings other then –ить and belong to the second conjugation. When teaching these exceptions in Russian, teachers form the words in a rhyming sentence to help students to memorize the words. Here they are:
Гнать, держать, дышать, обидеть, Слышать, видеть, ненавидеть, а еще смотреть, вертеть, и зависеть, и терпеть.
And I’ll conjugate verb говорить (to speak) to demonstrate how the second conjugation verbs are conjugated:
Я говорю
Ты говоришь
Он/она говорит
Мы говорим
Вы говорите
Они говорят
So, if you’d like to say that you speak Russian in Russian, you can say:
Я говорю по-русски.
Or if someone is asking you:
Вы говорите по-русски?
You know what it means!
Do you speak Russian?
This all so far about the verb conjugation, just a quick reminder, when conjugating verbs remember that the stem of the verb might change, so it is important at this point to learn the conjugation at the same time you learn a new verb, to make sure that you are correctly conjugating it.
And here is a little exercise – Please conjugate these verbs:
Смотреть (to watch)
Делить (to share)
Пилить (to saw)
Дышать (to breath)
Обидеть (to hurt someone)
Ненавидеть (to hate)
Дразнить (to tease)
Лечить (to give treatment)
Получить (to receive)
Гнать (to chase)
