Russian Slang and Idioms Lesson 11.

Posted on September 16th, 2010

Hi, and welcome to Russian4real’s Slang and Idioms lesson 11.

To make our lessons easier and more fun, I decided to only teach you 3 idioms in one lesson. I think that it will be easier for you to learn new words and expressions that way! There still is going to be a test at the end of the lesson. Yap, still three questions! Oh, come on, it’s really easy! I’ll make sure it is! ;)

All right, are we ready for the next lesson? Here it is:

Our first idiom is Без оглядки [byez ag-LYAD-ki]. It means to do something very fast without looking back. Usually we use this expression when we talk about running, or hiding.

For example, you can say in Russian:
Я так испугался, что бежал без оглядки!
[ya tak is-poo-GAL-sya, shto bi-ZHAL bez ag-LYAD-ki]
I was so scared that I was running without looking back!

Here is another idiom:

Девичья память [DYE-vich-ya PA-myat’]. When we say that someone has Девичья память, it means that they have a very bad memory.

For example, you’ve probably heard this before:

Я не могу найти ключи! У меня девичья память!
[ya ni ma-GOO nai-TI klyoo-CHI! oo mi-NYA DYE-vich-ya PA-myat’]
I can’t find the keys! My memory is very bad!

And here is the last idiom for today: проще пареной репы [PRO-shye PA-ryen-nai RYE-pee]. Проще пареной репы means very easy. There is a similar expression in English that you might have heard and maybe even used before – “easy peasy lemon squeezy”! It’s pretty much the same thing.

And here is an example:
Да, я знаю, как починить компьютер! Это проще пареной репы!
[da, ya ZNA-yoo kak pa-chi-NIT’ kam-PYOO-tyer! E-ta PRO-shye PA-rin-nay RYE-pi]
Yes, I know how to fix the computer! It’s really easy!

And here is our quick test:
1.    What Russian idiom would you use to say that your memory is very bad?
2.    What Russian idiom is similar to “easy peasy lemon squeezy”?
3.    What does idiom “без оглядки” mean?

How was the test? Was it проще паренной репы? I hope so!  :)

I hope you had fun today! See you next week!
