Watch the video lesson:

Russian Pronoun Это

Это [E-ta] is an invariable pronoun, and it can be translated in English as “this”, “that” or “it”.
For example:
– Что это? What is it/this/that? (Depending on the context. )
– Это карандаш.

– Кто этот молодой человек?
– Это мой друг.

Russian Pronoun Вот

Вот (particle) [VOT] – here, there,

Вот is usually used when showing something or pointing at something or someone.
Examples:
– Где мои ключи?
– Вот они. (showing the keys, or pointing at the keys)

– Вот ваш чай. (pointing at the tea)

The Interrogative Pronouns. Вопросительные Местоимения.

Let’s see how you can ask simple questions in Russian using these question words (interrogative pronouns) кто and что. Let’s start with кто.

Russian Interrogative Pronoun Кто

Кто? [KTO] Who?

For example:

Кто это? Who is it/this/that?
– Это Лена.

In this case also when replying questions with это, you can drop это:
– Кто это?
– Лена.

You can also add these words at the end of this question: такой, такая, такие
Kто это такой?
Кто это такая?

You can also swap words “это” and “кто” in these sentences, but the meaning will stay the same. For example, you can also say:
Kто это такой?
Это кто такой?

Кто это?
Это кто?

Russian Interrogative Pronoun Что

Что? [SHTO] What?
Let’s take a look at a few examples:

– Что это? What is it/this/that? (Again, the English translation will depend on the context)
Replies:
– Это телефон.

When replying questions with это, you can drop это and just reply the question with a noun.
– Что это?
– Телефон.

You can switch words это and что but the meaning of the sentence will stay the same:
Что это? [SHTO E-ta] what is it?
(А) это что? [(a) E-ta SHTO] what is it?

Это что такое? [shto e-ta ta-KO-ye] what is it?
(А) что это такое? [(a) shto e-ta ta-KO-ye] what is it?

And of course, there are many more uses of the word “что”, these are just some of them.
You can also ask these questions:
Что? [SHTO] what?
Что вы сказали? (Что ты сказал? Что ты сказала?) [shto vi ska-ZA-lee] what did you say?
Что случилось? [shto sloo-CHEE-las’] what’s happened?

This is all for today and now let’s practice! Below is an exercise to help you practice the rules you’ve learned today.
