Russian Vocabulary Lesson: Going to the Movies

Posted on October 26th, 2012

Going to the movies - Russian vocabularyDon’t you just love going to the movies? For me it’s a whole ritual: I go with a very good friend of mine, we get a big bag of sweet popcorn (yes, I am a sweet tooth), a diet coke (and that’s how I usually cut down on sugar), and come in with plenty of time to watch all the commercials (well, someone has to watch them, right?). Just the thought of munching on fresh popcorn in front of the big screen makes me want to run to the movie theater now…

If you are planning to go to the movies this weekend, you might want to learn some movies vocabulary in Russian to show off to your Russian friends.

Now that you know movie genres in Russian, can you tell me what your favorite movie genre is?

Лично я люблю романтические фильмы и комедии. А вы?
I personally like romantic movies and comedies. And you?

You’ve arrived to the movie theater. Now what? let’s take a look at a few more words that will help you to find your way around.

Касса [KA-sa] ticket office
Кино [kee-NO] movie theater, cinema, movie
Фильм [FEEL’M] film, movie
Кинотеатр [kee-na-tee-ATR] movie theater, cinema
Зрительный зал [ZREE-tyel’-niy ZAL] cinema hall
Экран [ek-RAN] screen
Смотреть фильм [smat-RYET’ FEEL’M] watch a movie
Попкорн [pap-KORN] popcorn
Напиток [na-PEE-tak] drink

So, if you would like to buy two tickets to the movies, you would say to the cashier:
- Дайте, пожалуйста, два билетика на «Пираты Карибского Моря».

or you can also say:
- Два билета на «Пираты Карибского Моря», пожалуйста.

This is how you would order popcorn in Russian:
- Две кока-колы и один большой пакет попкорна, пожалуйста.

I know that sometimes it’s common not to use word “пожалуйста” in Russian, when ordering or buying something. You might hear sometimes people saying:

- Две кока-колы и один большой пакет попкорна.

Without word “пожалуйста”. But I believe it’s always a good idea to be polite and nice to people around you, even if they are not so polite with you. My parents always taught me to be polite, courteous and respectful and I believe these are very important qualities, and they only bring out the best in people around us. This is why I think it’s always important to use words “пожалуйста” and “спасибо”.

After the movie is over, you most definitely will want to share your thoughts about the movie with your friend. Here are a few more words that will be helpful to you when chatting to your Russian friend:

Сценарий [stsye-NA-reey] script
Жанр [ZHANR] genre

Критик [KREE-teek] critic
Блокбастер [blok-BAS-tyer] blockbuster
Трёхмерный [tryoh-MYER-niy] three-dimensional
3D фильм [tree DEE FEEL’M] 3D movie
Актёр [ak-TYOR] actor
Актриса [ak-TREE-sa] actress
Знаменитый (adj.) [zna-mee-NEE-tiy] famous
Знаменитость (n.) [zna-mye-NEE-tast’] celebrity
Звезда [zveez-DA] celebrity
