Russian Slang and Idioms. Lesson 14.

Posted on October 4th, 2010

Hi and welcome to the Russian Slang and Idioms lesson 14!
Here is the video:

Transcript of the lesson:

Овчинка выделки не стоит [af-CHIN-ka VEE-dyel-ki ni STO-it] – we say this about something that isn’t worth the time and effort.

For example, you can say in Russian:
Я решил больше не ходить в спортзал. Овчинка выделки не стоит.
[ya ri-SHEEL BOL’-shye ni ha-DIT’ f spart-ZAL. af-CHIN-ka VEE-dyel-ki ni STO-it]
I decided not to go to the gym any more. It’s not worth the effort.

The second idiom is держать язык за зубами.
Держать язык за зубами [dir-ZHAT’ ya-ZEEK za zoo-BA-mi] means to keep a secret.

For example, you can say:
Я обещал Мае, что буду держать язык за зубами.
[ya a-bi-SHAL MA-ye SHTO BOO-doo dir-ZHAT’ ya-ZEEK za zoo-BA-mi]
I promised Maya that I won’t tell anyone.

The last Russian idiom for today is час пик.
Час пик [CHAS PIK] means rush hour.

Here is an example:
Я часто застреваю в пробке в час пик.
[ya CHAS-ta zas-tri-VA-yoo f PROB-kye f CHAS PIK]
I often get stuck in traffic during the rush hour.

And now you are ready for the test!

Test:
1. How can you say in Russian that something isn’t worth the effort?
2. Please translate into Russian:  There is always a traffic jam during the rush hour.
3. How can you say in Russian: I promise I won’t tell anyone?
